Exactly. I don't know why they think that taunting the man with the guns in a system where branches are supposed to balance each other is going to work for them.

But we are all we have. And we need to be intelligent about it. To not piddle it away chasing fantasies, rage fests, or pie in the sky fantasies. But building real, down to earth things.

The situation for a resident of California is uncertain. I see the decline of every part of state government. Our elections are a joke and people like me see no way out of the morass. If your scenario comes to pass, and California breaks away from the Republic, then a civil war here will leave San Francisco starving and farmers in the rural 90% of the state trying to do business with Nevada.

While I respect the position, I think we should be considering the future United States in more of a post-soviet light. If the governor of California or New York or Texas refuses federal mandates, then it’s the governor and a few top aids that get targeted… which doesn’t expand into militarily retaking a state through combat.

The result will be more of an imperial system with a United States centralized federal government and an executive as emperor. Then states are likely to be run by smaller compliant ministers/governors with substantial leeway in how they choose to execute orders.

That’s how the Russian Federation and China operate now, with a pseudo-feudal distribution of powers. Emperor→governors→mayors→citizens. I find this future model far more likely than any formalized breakup in the US.
